Joel’s passion is writing and performing music that inspires his audience to recognize the wonderful gift of love in their lives, find inspiration and joy in each day, live a thankful heart, inspire dreams that become reality, celebrate God in their lives, and offer hope to those in despair.
Background:
Born on April 6, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Joel is the second-born child to parents, Stu and Aldona Phillips. Joel entered this world with music in his soul, and though it would be years before his musical talent would be fully discovered and rise to fruition, the seed was truly present at birth.
In 1965, Joel was six years old when his family moved to Brentwood, TN, a suburb of Nashville, TN in the United States. Joel's father was a successful Canadian country-western singer/songwriter during this time and decided to move his family to Tennessee to fulfill his own dreams of signing with RCA Victor as a recording artist and becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry (1967).
Joel received his Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in 1981 and returned to MTSU in Fall of the same year to take the required courses offered in the curriculum for a music degree. He remained in Tennessee until 1984 and then moved to San Diego, CA to further his music career. During that time, Joel’s father released a gospel CD in 1988 and chose songs from Joel's songwriting catalog for the project. One of the songs, “You Love the Hurt Away”, was selected as the title cut for the CD. It was also during this time in California that Joel became a United States citizen and remained there until returning to Tennessee in 1990.
Joel has two children from a previous marriage. He has a daughter, Lauren, who is an accomplished artist and bass player (laurenalexandraart.com), and she is married to Stacy Hogan, an accomplished producer, singer/songwriter, musician, and founder of the band, Sin Shake Sin. Joel also has a son, Ryan who also has demonstrated a gifted talent for music. Joel remarried in 2012 to the love of his life, Benita Phillips, and he declares she is his soulmate for eternity! The love songs he now writes are proof of it!
Current:
Joel has released several songs in 2024, including "Thin Blue Line" (a tribute song of support to our wonderful law enforcement heroes everywhere), "My Little Girl" (a special wedding song that Joel wrote for his daughter, Lauren, and was also chosen for their father/daughter dance), "True Love Is In Your Eyes" (a love song Joel wrote for his wife, Benita), and "I Want You In My Arms" (another love song Joel wrote for Benita). In addition, more songs are to be released in 2024, and a new album project is scheduled for release in late 2024. This album will be a compilation of love songs written for Joel's wife, Benita, and it promises to be chart buster! Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming release of Joel's new album!
